Evoked Potential Practice Exam

Somatosensory evoked potentials reflect the functional status of the somatosensory pathways from peripheral nerves up to the cortex, including the dorsal column–medial lemniscus system that carries fine touch, vibration, and proprioception. When these pathways are disrupted, the sense of body position and movement (proprioception) tends to be impaired, which aligns closely with abnormal SSEPs. Vertigo points to the vestibular system, tinnitus to the auditory pathway, and hemiparesis to motor pathways, none of which are the primary targets of SSEPs. So proprioception deficit is the symptom most tightly linked to somatosensory evoked potential abnormalities.
